Comenzamos el mes de septiembre de 2026 con una terrible noticia generada por la siguiente nota de la prima Maggie:

We begin the month of September 2026 with terrible news, prompted by the following note from Cousin Maggie:

Hi Primas! This is Maggie. Unfortunately mom is in the hospital since Sunday. She was having some

stomach pains that were pretty bad, so I took her to ER. I didn’t want to call anyone till we had some answers and here they are.

We have 3 issues:

A Stomach Mass: The biopsy results are not back yet so they don’t know if the mass is a tumor or an ulcer. Either way she has to have surgery to either remove it (if cancer) or remove or bypass it if ulcer. Surgery will be scheduled for Thursday or Friday. Dr does not think she will tolerate Chemo, so they are going straight to surgery.

Aortic Valve:

She has severe stenosis where the valve is closing and is almost closed, however she is not really showing the symptoms. Cardiology is consulting the options to see what needs to be done. The mass is priority of course. Most likely another procedure 😢

Blood count:

She’s lost a lot of blood. Count is below 8 so may need a blood transfusion, especially for the surgeries. Both surgeons will determine that.

She’s good spirits, loving the attention she is getting from everyone. We are in Gainesville, North Florida Regional RM 610

We will be here at least another week and then see what the plan would be next. I’ve been staying with her at the hospital. This is my cell and you are welcome to call or text me anytime. She has her phone as well and I’m sure would love to hear from you. Love you! I’m sorry for the troubling news but we’re dealing. 🙏🏻

En tal sentido le envié una copia de la nota de Maggie a mi médico de cabecera para evaluar cuál era la gravedad que confrontaba la prima Yoly, porque dentro de las múltiples cosas que sé, no está el tema médico. Se capar cochinos, ovejas y caballos. Sé sacar a los equinos de un cólico, pero más allá de eso, solo sé que no se nada. Entonces esto fue lo que mi querido médico me respondió respondió:

With that in mind, I sent a copy of Maggie’s note to my primary care physician to assess the severity of Cousin Yoly’s condition, since medical matters aren't exactly among my areas of expertise. I know how to castrate pigs and horses. I know how to treat colic in horses, but beyond that, I know next to nothing. So, here is what my dear doctor replied:

Gravedad: Es la prioridad absoluta de los médicos. La decisión de ir directo a cirugía el jueves o viernes (sin intentar quimioterapia previa) es común cuando el equipo médico considera que la mejor opción para solucionar el dolor de inmediato y obtener un diagnóstico definitivo es operar.
Severity: This is the doctors' absolute priority. The decision to proceed directly to surgery on Thursday or Friday—without attempting prior chemotherapy—is common when the medical team determines that operating is the best option to immediately relieve pain and obtain a definitive diagnosis.

2. Estenosis de la válvula aórtica (Condición Crónica de Cuidado)

¿Qué significa? La válvula del corazón que bombea sangre hacia el resto del cuerpo se ha estrechado significativamente ("casi cerrada") debido al desgaste.
2. Aortic Valve Stenosis (Chronic Care Condition)
What does it mean? The heart valve that pumps blood to the rest of the body has narrowed significantly ("almost closed") due to wear and tear.
Gravedad: Médicamente, una estenosis aórtica severa es seria. The fact that the patient is in good spirits, enjoying the care provided, and is at a top-tier university hospital like the one in Gainesville (UF Health / North Florida Regional) are excellent signs. The medical team is coordinating among several surgeons to address the three issues in an orderly fashion.x

Como podrán imaginar, pensábamos que "La Pelona" estaba a punto de llevarse a la Prima Yoly. Por la nota de Maggie, supusimos que La Yoly estaba como "El Gallo de Morón" (¡sin plumas y cacareando!)... o como El Gorrión de Guajimico: ¡más allá que de acá! As you can imagine, we thought the Grim Reaper was about to carry off Cousin Yoly. Judging by Maggie’s note, we assumed Yoly was in a sorry state—like the "Rooster of Morón" (featherless yet still crowing!) or the "Sparrow of Guajimico": with one foot already in the grave! As Siomara Madre (may she rest in peace) used to say: "It was nothing—just an eye injury... except she was holding the eye in her hand!"x

Thank God—and all the Orisha saints, the Seven African Powers, Shango, and Obatala—that the commotion turned out to be much ado about nothing. When Siomi entered the hospital room where La Yoly was staying, she saw her reading a book maybe by Laurien Berenson about her detective dogs—the kind she loves so much.

However, the trip gave us the chance to take a lovely little drive through Florida and to reminisce about days gone by—which were always better!

Anyway, the next day—September 2nd, in the Year of Our Lord—we got up early and headed for Gainesville, our hearts in our mouths. Our first memory of the day came when Siomi received a call from Luly (Lourdes Prieto Martín), her favorite cousin; she described—in vivid detail—the antics of her grandson, whom we had met as an infant back in 2021 and who must be of marriageable age by now.

Luego de desayunar en Panera unos cafés y unas galleticas que nos costaron los ojos de nuestras caras, hicimos una parada técnica en "Florida Citrus Center". Siempre nos ha gustado pararnos en las carreteras para buscar "porqueriés".

After having coffee and some cookies at Panera—which cost us an arm and a leg—we made a quick stop at the "Florida Citrus Center." We’ve always enjoyed stopping along the highway to look for junk.

There is an old saying in Venezuela that goes: "Colombians, pigeons, and cats... are three ungrateful creatures"—and in a way, it is true. One of the many feral cats (street cats, wild cats—truly savage ones!) that we rescued from a wretched existence bit me while I was feeding it.

And yet, life has taught me that everything can be resolved with love. That very same ungrateful cat that bit me—through nothing but love and affection—I turned into my favorite cat... until he decided to abandon me and move in with a neighbor.

Not dogs. Dogs are like Cubans: grateful and loyal! At our ranch in Venezuela—Daktari Ranch—we once had as many as 18 German Shepherds: all of them loyal and unwavering! Breeding German Shepherds isn't in our budget these days.

Claro que teníamos incontables gatos... tantos que no tenemos idea del número exacto - ¿50? - y, además: ¡dos ocelotes! Por cierto... los ocelotes, algunas veces... ¡se nos escapaban!

Of course, we had countless cats—so many that we have no idea of the exact number (50?)—and, what's more: two ocelots! By the way... the ocelots would sometimes... escape!

Por fin llegamos a nuestro hotel en Gainesville, no sin antes hacer una parada -también técnica- en ABC Fine Wine & Spirits, donde nos compramos una botellita de güiski escocés de 9 años marca Clan McGregor.

We finally arrived at our hotel in Gainesville, but not before making a stop—another quick, practical one—at ABC Fine Wine & Spirits, where we bought a small bottle of 9-year-old Clan McGregor Scotch whisky.

Sorprendentemente nos regalaron dos muestras de un producto nuevo llamado "Pamos". Nos habían dicho que se trataba de un pus-café; esos cocteles tradicionales hechos con varias capas de licores de distintos colores que no se mezclan y se sirven tradicionalmente después de comer, a menudo acompañado de una taza de café: a modo de digestivo.

Surprisingly, we were given two samples of a new product called "Pamos." We had been told it was a *pousse-café*—those traditional cocktails made of layered liqueurs of different colors that do not mix, typically served after a meal (often alongside a cup of coffee) as a digestif.

Yolandita

Cuando conocí a Yolandita en Miami, en el año 74, se me pareció muchísimo a Catherine Zeta-Jones en sus mejores tiempos: ¡antes de la quemazón! Hoy de Catherine no queda más que el recuerdo. Sombra de lo que ayer fue: ¡no es!

When I met Yolandita in Miami back in '74, she reminded me so much of Catherine Zeta-Jones in her prime—before she got all burnt out! Today, nothing remains of Catherine but the memory. She is a mere shadow of her former self.

Aquél año también conocí a Maggie, a Johana, a "Mama Linda" (la Tía Yolanda) y a "Papa Lindo", que de lindo no tenía -el pobre- ni la pepa del ojo, bautizado por Pichincha como "El Sabio Pelusa".

That year I also met Maggie, Johana, "Mama Linda" (Aunt Yolanda), and "Papa Lindo"—who, poor soul, didn't have a shred of beatutifuliness about him—whom Pichincha had dubbed "El Sabio Pelusa" (The Wise Fuzzball).

Todos sabíamos que el Tío Pichincha no se llevaba muy bien con "Papa Lindo". Discutían sobre cualquier tópico, especialmente sobre los carros que se habían comprado. Para mi suerte, todavía no me conocían, por lo que no fui objeto de esas "críticas constructivas" cuando en 1970 llevé el Toronado a Venezuela.

We all knew that Uncle Pichincha didn't get along very well with "Papa Lindo." They would argue about anything and everything, especially the cars they had bought. Luckily for me, they didn't know me yet, so I wasn't the target of that "constructive criticism" when in 1970, I brought the Toronado to Venezuela

En febrero de 2014 nos encontramos con Maggie, Sam (QEPD) y Matthew en una visita que nos hicieron en Miami.

In February 2014, we met up with Maggie, Sam (RIP), and Matthew during a visit they paid us in Miami.

El 3 de septiembre, cuando Siomi entró en la habitación de Yoly: ¡la vio fresca como una lechuga! Tan fresca estaba, que los médicos decidieron mandarla a la casa con su perro y su gata. Sin embargo, la prima salió muy emocionada de haberla visto luego de algunos años sin verse.

On September 3rd, when Siomi walked into Yoly’s room, she found her looking fresh as a daisy! She looked so well that the doctors decided to send her home with her dog and cat. Nevertheless, the cousin left feeling very moved after seeing her again, as they hadn't seen each other for a few years.

En Lake City y en mayo de 2015, comenzando nuestra II Luna de Miel, Siomi se vio con Yoly. Aquella tarde conocimos al Tío Robertico, QEPD y nos reunimos con Maggie y su hijo Matthew antes de que creciera más que Barron Trump.

In Lake City, in May 2015—at the start of our second honeymoon—Siomi met up with Yoly. That afternoon, we met Uncle Robertico (may he rest in peace) and got together with Maggie and her son Matthew before he grew taller than Barron Trump.

Esta visita de Siomi a Yoly le sirvió de inspiración y al llegar al hotel, luego de un par de tragos, le dio vida a la siguiente poesía titulada "¡Mi Querida Prima!"

Son muchos, muchísimos recuerdos que tenemos de nuestros viajes a Miami, que podemos sumar a los que tenía ya Siomi antes de conocernos en 1974: ¡hace 52 años, ocho meses y siete días!

We have so many—so very many—memories of our trips to Miami that we can add to the ones Siomi already had before we met in 1974: fifty-two years, eight months, and seven days ago!

xMEMORIES...!

Pero el tiempo pasa para incrementar las experiencias, tanto buenas como malas. A nosotros nos han llovido mucho, pero al final de cada temporal el sol nos ha salido fuerte y resplandeciente, porque mientras más terribles han sido nuestras tormentas, más profundas han crecido nuestras raíces.

But time passes to increase experiences, both good and bad. It has rained a lot on us, but at the end of each storm the sun has come out strong and shining, because the more terrible our storms have been, the deeper our roots have grown.

A veces es bueno y recomendable que nuestros hijos y nietos conozcan nuestras odiseas para que aprendan a valorar mejor lo que tienen.

Sometimes it is good and advisable for our children and grandchildren to know about our ordeals, so that they learn to better appreciate what they have.

Pero, así como existen momentos malos, también los ha habido buenos: ¡y en abundancia! Esos gratos momentos los hemos ido inmortalizando en nuestros videos y fotos.

Por fortuna he tenido desde muy niño, el hobby de guardar recuerdos y entre ellos: ¡fotos y videos! En mi videoteca tengo más de 7mil videos y guardo más de 9mil fotos. Ahí podemos ver que unas son de cal: ¡y otras son de arena! Si la vida fuese una felicidad continua: ¡sería muy aburrida! They say life is a poorly played tango. I disagree. Life is... well, life! It isn't always a bed of roses, as the Lynn Anderson song goes. Fortunately, ever since I was a child, I’ve had a hobby of preserving memories—including photos and videos. My collection holds over 7,000 videos and more than 9,000 photos. They show us the ups and the downs—the good times and the bad. If life were nothing but continuous happiness, it would be incredibly boring! To truly appreciate happiness, we have to compare it with our moments of unhappiness.

Mientras tanto, no nos queda otra que buscar los momentos felices y evitar los ratos desagradables. ¿Que lo de La Yolandita fue una "falsa alarma"?: ¡perfecto! Vamos a ver cómo nos divertimos sacándole provecho a esa "falsedad".

We tend to forget our happy moments and dwell on the unhappy ones. We need to apply a sort of "checks and balances" system. We aren't designed to last forever; our "life contract" has an expiration date. We are all destined to return to dust and ashes—the only questions are when and how. In the meantime, we have no choice but to seek out happy moments and avoid unpleasant ones. So, the whole "Yolandita" thing turned out to be a false alarm? Perfect! Let's see how we can have some fun making the most of that "falsehood."

Aprovechando que todo fue un susto y que La Yoly abandonaría pronto su hospitalización, nos propusimos hacer un poco de turismo por estos lares norteños floridanos. En tal sentido decidimos, en primer término, visitar "Fanning Springs State Park".

Since it turned out to be just a scare and La Yoly was soon to be discharged from the hospital, we decided to do some sightseeing in this part of northern Florida. To that end, we first chose to visit Fanning Springs State Park.

El Musgo Español

En la medida en que nos adentrábamos al norte de Florida comenzábamos a ver los bellísimos robles cargados de lo que muchos consideran un parásito o, en el mejor de los casos, un musgo. Cuando hace décadas nos topamos con estos majestuosos y misteriosos árboles me propuse averiguar cómo se llamaban esas "algas". Descubrkí que no son ni algas, ni musgos: ¡ni mucho menos parásitos!

As we ventured into northern Florida, we began to see beautiful oak trees laden with what many consider to be a parasite or, at best, a type of moss. When we first encountered these majestic, mysterious trees decades ago, I set out to find out the name of that "algae." I discovered that it is neither algae nor moss—and certainly not a parasite!

La más famosa de esas plantas colgantes en los robles se llama "musgo español" (nombre científico: Tillandsia usneoides). También se le conoce en distintas regiones como barba de viejo, heno, paste o salvajina y para colmos, no es español. Técnicamente es una planta epífita (una planta aérea) que pertenece a la familia de las bromelias, lo que significa que está evolutivamente emparentada con la piña.

The most famous of these hanging plants found on oak trees is called "Spanish moss" (scientific name: *Tillandsia usneoides*). It is also known in various regions by names such as *barba de viejo* (old man's beard), *heno* (hay), *paste*, or *salvajina*—and to top it all off, it isn't Spanish. Technically, it is an epiphyte (an air plant) belonging to the bromeliad family, meaning it is evolutionarily related to the pineapple.

No tiene raíces tradicionales y no penetra la corteza del roble para absorber su savia. Solo utiliza las ramas del árbol como "ancla" para sostenerse en lo alto. El parque está situado en el norte de nuestro estado, justo al lado del famoso e histórico Río Suwannee (Suwannee River), en el caserío de Fanning Springs, de unos 1,200 habitantes, en su mayoría "verdes". The water bubbles up from the ground at a constant temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit (about 22 degrees Celsius) year-round, making it perfect for cooling off on hot days—provided you have Eskimo blood or genes.

Los espectáculos de juglares (o minstrel shows) eran una forma de entretenimiento teatral estadounidense que nació a principios del siglo XIX (década de 1830) y combinaba música, danza, chistes y actos de variedad. Su característica principal, y la más polémica, era que se basaban en el racismo y en la caricaturización de las personas afroamericanas, algo que hubiera cautivado a mi querida suegra Siomara Madre: ¡QEPD!

Minstrel shows were a form of American theatrical entertainment that emerged in the early 19th century (the 1830s) and combined music, dance, jokes, and variety acts. Their defining—and most controversial—characteristic was that they were rooted in racism and the caricaturing of African Americans; this is something that would have captivated my dear mother-in-law, Siomara Madre—may she rest in peace!

Los actores (inicialmente hombres blancos, y más tarde también algunos negros) se pintaban la cara con corcho quemado o maquillaje negro y exageraban sus labios con color blanco o rojo. Phrases and expressions—such as the character claiming to "eat an alligator" or "sit on a hornet’s nest," or beating people until they were reduced to "a grease spot"—grotesquely reinforced the notion that the Black population lacked the sophistication, capacity for pain, or sensitivity of white people.x

Como dato curioso e histórico me tengo que referir a mi querida suegra, "Siomara Madre", QEPD. Muchos hogares cubanos de clase media alta... hacia arriba, contrataban domésticas para limpiar, cocinar o cuidar a sus bebés. Mi suegra nos contaba que se sabía la salud de "los verdes" (así llamaba ella a los afrocubanos), por el brillo de la piel. Si la piel les brillaba: ¡estaban sanos! En tal sentido se podrían contratar. ¡Cosas de Cuba!

As an interesting historical anecdote, I must mention my dear mother-in-law, "Siomara Madre"—may she rest in peace. Many upper-middle-class Cuban households—and those even wealthier—hired domestic workers to clean, cook, or look after their babies. My mother-in-law used to tell us that she could gauge the health of "the greens" (as she called Afro-Cubans) by the sheen of their skin. If their skin had a healthy glow, they were fit to be hired. That’s Cuba for you!

Silver Springs State Park

La Lechonera de Orlando

De "Silver Springs" nos fuimos a la famosísima lechonera de Orlando, conocida como "El Sazón de Mi viejo". No debemos confundirnos con los géneros puertorriqueños. Por alguna razón que no entendemos, ellos trastornas los géneros. A los bombillos les laman "las bombillas". Al sartén les llaman "la sartén". Al calor le llaman "la calor"... y así sucesivamente. Por supuesto, a "la sazón": ¡les llaman "el sazón"!

From Silver Springs, we headed to Orlando’s famous *lechonera*—a roast pork spot—known as "El Sazón de Mi Viejo." We shouldn't get confused by the way Puerto Ricans handle genders. For some reason we don't quite grasp, they mix them up. They call lightbulbs *las bombillas* (feminine), frying pans *la sartén* (feminine), and heat *la calor* (feminine)... and so on. Naturally, when it comes to *sazón* (seasoning)—which is usually feminine—they call it *el sazón* (masculine)!

Uno de los competidores con más galardones es, precisamente, "El Sazón de Mi Viejo" y me propuse probar su lechón antes de saltar el gran charco de esta vida a la otra.

One of the most highly decorated competitors is, in fact, "El Sazón de Mi Viejo," and I made it a point to try their roast suckling pig before crossing the great divide from this life to the next.

No nos decepcionamos. El lechón asado de "El Sazón de Mi Viejo" es insuperable. La suavidad, lo jugoso de la carne y, sobre todo: ¡el cuerito! ¿Y la yuca? ¡Jamás habíamos probado una yuca mejor! El "fufú" (lo que en Puerto Rico le llaman "Mofongo" y en la República Dominicana le llaman "mangú" (aunque tienen ciertas diferencias mínimas), no estaba a la altura del lechón y de la yuca: ¡yo lo hago mejor!

We weren't disappointed. The roast suckling pig at "El Sazón de Mi Viejo" is unbeatable. The tenderness, the juiciness of the meat, and—above all—the crispy skin! And the yuca? We had never tasted better yuca! The "fufú" (what is called "Mofongo" in Puerto Rico and "mangú" in the Dominican Republic—though there are slight differences) didn't quite measure up to the pig and the yuca: I make it better myself!

El Regreso

Luego de nuestro periplo por el norte de La Florida y de corroborar que La Yoly estaba a buen resguardo con su perro favorito, regresamos a nuestro hogar: "¡Serendípity!" After our journey through northern Florida and confirming that Yoly was safe and sound with her favorite dog, we returned to our home: "Serendípity!" Believe it or not, the best part of coming back was that I got to sleep that night with my favorite cat: Tico—short for "Eléctrico."

Sin embargo, al llegar nos encontramos con una desagradable sorpresa. El portal estaba patas pa'rriba. Los cojines del sofá estaban todos en el suelo y notamos que el contenedor de la comida de los gatos estaba abierto y con poco alimento.

However, upon arrival, we were met with an unpleasant surprise. The entryway was in complete disarray. The sofa cushions were all on the floor, and we noticed that the cat food container was open and running low on food.

Al día siguiente nos dimos cuenta de lo ocurrido: ¡una banda de mapaches había aprovechado nuestra ausencia para adueñarse de "Serendipity".

The next day, we realized what had happened: a gang of raccoons had taken advantage of our absence to take over "Serendipity."

Para nuestro gran asombro, desde que nos mudamos al condado de Broward, cerca de Fort Lauderdale, hemos tenido más encuentros cercanos del tercer tipo con animales silvestres que los que tuvimos en los 15 años que vivimos en la Finca Daktari, en las selvas venezolanas.

To our great astonishment, since moving to Broward County, near Fort Lauderdale, we have had more close encounters with wildlife than we did during the 15 years we lived at Finca Daktari in the Venezuelan jungles.
